Exceptional Octagonal Butter Box, ca 1850, Jämtland, Sweden
Hand-carved stone box in octagonal form.
The modernistic shape is simple and striking, with a patina formed through age and use.
The knob is carved from a solid piece of stone and is not added on.
The box is made from light soapstone from Handöl, Sweden, a variety with higher talc content, giving it a pale, marble-like appearance. This material was used to imitate more expensive marble such as Carrara in 19th-century
