Museum Quality Swedish Baroque Cabinet, Gagnef, Dalarna, 1600s
This is by far one of the most spectacular and striking historical pieces of furniture we have ever had the pleasure of acquiring.
A simple and rural primitive cabinet, representing early freestanding furniture from Sweden.
Pieces like this are extremely rare, as most furniture of the period was built directly into the traditional log houses.
Extremely few pieces of folk art furniture have survived from this period, and only a small number exist in museums and private collectors today. This is why it was lent out for documentation in the book Folklig Möbelkultur i Svenska Bygder by Sigurd Erixon, which is widely considered the gold standard reference on Swedish allmoge furniture.
A historic shipping label from Nordiska Museet remains on the piece, attached when the cabinet was photographed for the book.
The cabinet’s raw and simple aesthetics are truly breathtaking.
No lock was ever installed.
Made of pine wood with hand-forged iron hinges.
